Arachis pintoi, commonly known as forage peanut, is a leguminous plant with good forage yield and nutritional quality adapted to the Brazilian environmental conditions and used in grass/legume pastures or preserved as silage or hay. In this study, we evaluated the nutritional value and dry matter losses of silages produced with different proportions of forage peanutcv. BRS Mandobi and elephant grass. Five levels of substitution of elephant grass (0, 25, 50, 75, and 100%, fresh matter basis) for the legume were tested in a completely randomized design with four replicates. The fiber components of the silages, except lignin, decreased with higher levels of forage peanut. Crude protein content and in vitro dry matter digestibility presented maximum values of... |

Current experiment identified the height of signal grass {Urochloa decumbens (Stapf) R. D. Webster cv. Basilisk [syn. Brachiaria decumbens Stapf cv. Basilisk]} at the beginning of deferment that provided an appropriate pasture structure and potential selectivity by cattle on deferred pastures. Four pasture heights at the beginning of deferment (10, 20, 30 and 40 cm) and two forage samples (available on pasture and simulated grazing) were studied. The experimental design was set in completely randomized blocks, with two replications, in a split-plot arrangement. Higher percentage of live leaf blades and lower percentage of live stems and senescent forage were recorded in the forage sample from simulated grazing. The increase in pasture height increased the... |

U.S. dairy operations are sorted via a multinomial logit model into three production systems: pasture-based, semi-pasture-based, and conventional. Region, farm size, financial situation, and production intensity measures impact system choice. Analysis follows to determine the impact of production system on enterprise profitability. Region, farm size, and demographic variables impact profitability, as does system choice: semi-pasture-based operations were less profitable than conventional operations on an enterprise, per hundredweight of milk produced basis. Significant differences were not found in the profitability of pasture-based operations versus those using other systems. |

The work was developed in the experimental station of Embrapa Gado de Leite (Dairy Cattle Embrapa), in Coronel Pacheco, in Zona da Mata Region of Minas Gerais, with the purpose of evaluating the productive performance of Holstein cows kept on 'Coast-cross' (Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pears) pasture, fertilized, strategically irrigated and where the cows were daily supplemented with 3 or 6 kg of concentrate/cow/day. The data were collected during three years (October/2000 to October/2003), involving 108 lactations. An experimental randomized block design with two replicate areas per treatment was adopted, with nine animals per area and eighteen animals per treatment being utilized, with fixed stocking rate of five cows/ha. The system of grazing, under rotated... |

The egestion of particulate material as well as pigment degradation during microzooplankton grazing on phytoplankton are poorly known processes. In an attempt to evaluate these processes, changes in pigment concentrations within various size fractions were monitored in batch cultures of an assemblage of a pelagic ciliate (Strombidium sulcatum) and a heterotrophic flagellate (Paraphysomonas sp.) feeding on a cyanobacterium (Synechococcus sp.) over a 10-day period. Chlorophyll a, carotenoids and phaeopigments were not found in the 0.1-0.7 mu m fraction while the pigments originally in the 0.7-3.0 mu m fraction (prey) were transferred into the > 3.0 mu m size fraction (predator). During this transfer, the carotenoids (zeaxanthin and B-carotene) were not... |

Microzooplankton community composition in the north of South China Sea was investigated during autumn (between September and October), 2004. Dilution technique using chlorophyll a (Chl a) was employed to estimate grazing rates and grazing pressure. The results showed that Polymenophorea Oligotrichida was the dominant group with 16 species, and there were 4 species in Oligotrichina and 11 species in Tintinnina. The ciliates abundance ranged from 9 to 102 ind/m3. Instantaneous growth rates of phytoplankton (k) varied from 0.03 / d to 2.13 / d. Grazing rates of microzooplankton(g) ranged between 0.01 / d and 1.06 / d. The grazing pressure on initial phytoplankton stock (Pi) and primary production (Pp) was 0.089 % - 65.23 % and 33.63 % - 86.04 %, respectively.... |

In aquatic ecosystems, bacteria are controlled by several organisms in the food chain, such as protozoa, that use them as food source. This study aimed to quantify the ingestion and clearance rates of bacteria by ciliates and heterotrophic nanoflagellates (HNF) in a subtropical freshwater reservoir (Monjolinho reservoir -São Carlos -Brazil) during one year period, in order to verify their importance as consumers and controllers of bacteria in two seasons, a dry/cold and a rainy/warm one. For this purpose, in situ bacterivory experiments were carried out bimonthly using fluorescently labeled bacteria with 5-(4,6 diclorotriazin-2yl) aminofluorescein (DTAF). Although ciliates have shown the highest individual ingestion and clearance rates, bacterivory was... |

Protein and energy requirements of beef cattle, aged between 4 and 18 months old, on tropical pastures, were estimated. Forty-six Nellore calves (138.3 ± 3.4 kg BW and 90-150 days old), kept on pasture, were distributed in a maintenance group (restricted feeding) or in nutritional plans, receiving a supplements with different amounts of protein and carbohydrate or non-supplemented. The net energy requirement for weight gain (NEg) was obtained by linear regression of logarithm of retained energy as a function of logarithm of empty body weight gain. The net energy requirement for maintenance (NEm) was estimated by the exponential relation between heat production and metabolizable energy intake. Net protein requirement for weight gain (RP) was estimated by... |
